    What is Diabetes?

    in Ask your dietitian

Diabetes is the control of Blood Glucose in the body. Carbohydrates are what break down in to blood sugars. Carbohydrates are everything we eat, except protein which comes from mostly meat and fats. Carbohydrates are fruits, vegetables, grains, milk, pasta, rice, sugar, and honey to name a few.

Diabetes is measured with a lab called Hemoglobin A1C. 4.8-5.6% is considered normal or healthy

5.7-6.3% is considered prediabetes or increased risk for diabetes

6.4% and above means you are diabetic

    7% and above is uncontrolled

There are two types of diabetes type 1 and type 2.

Type 1 is usually found in children. It is an autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food.

Type 2 is usually aquired through lifestyle, being overweight, and not exercising
